Director Retires
Ellen M. Schmall has announced her retirement from PLCU’s Board of Directors, as of June 1, 2008. Ms. Schmall has the distinction of having served the credit union for 52 years — first as an employee and then as a director. She began as a teller in 1956 and by 1962 had worked her way up to Chief Executive Officer, a position she held until her retirement in 1990.
Under Ms. Schmall’s guidance, PLCU grew from one branch and $1 million in assets to seven branches and $157 million, and from just a handful of employees to more than a hundred. When she began her career, the credit union served a small group of civil service employees at the Point Loma Military Complex; she helped steer our expansion — first to include the Submarine Base on Ballast Point, and then to the entire Point Loma community. Ms. Schmall was also very active in the professional credit union community at the local, state and national levels.
Within three months of her “first” retirement, she was appointed to the Board of Directors of the credit union’s service organization, Point Loma Services, Inc. In 1993, Ms. Schmall was elected by the membership to the Board of Directors. During her 15-year tenure, she served five terms as the Board’s Treasurer and five terms as its Secretary. She has also chaired the Budget, Nominating, and Scholarship Committees and has served on numerous other committees.
Ms. Schmall has been instrumental in the development and governance of Point Loma Credit Union for a very long time. To recognize and honor her accomplishments and dedication, the Board of Directors has appointed her its first Director Emeritus. The entire credit union family expresses its sincerest gratitude and wishes Ms. Schmall a very happy retirement.
